FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett University volleyball won a pair of conference matches during Saturday's tri-match hosted by Methodist University. The Cougars topped Methodist 3-1 before sweeping Pfeiffer University 3-0 to end the day.
Averett (18-5, 9-3 USA South) dropped the opening set 25-19 to Methodist before rebounding to win the next three frames 25-20, 25-21 and 25-16. Juniors
Morgan Barnes and
Lauren Montren powered the Cougars' attack with 15 kills apiece, as Montren added nine digs and Barnes had three total blocks and four service aces. Senior
Sarah Shropshire also had double-digit kills with 14. Sophomore
Erin Gray had a team-high 21 digs, with freshman
Kinsley Stevens making 12 digs and sophomore
Skylyn Ostwalt adding 10 digs. Stevens also had 44 assists.
In the nightcap, Averett avenged a loss earlier this season to Pfeiffer by beating the Falcons 25-21, 25-16 and 25-19. Against Pfeiffer, Shropshire led the way with 12 kills and Barnes had 11 kills and four blocks. Gray had 12 digs, Stevens had 11 digs and Montren had 10 digs. Stevens finished with 30 assists.
Averett travels to Eastern Mennonite University for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
