HARRISONBURG, Va. — Averett University volleyball made quick work of Eastern Mennonite University with a 3-0 non-conference sweep of the Royals on Tuesday night. The Cougars won 25-17, 25-9 and 25-18.
Although Averett (19-5) started slow, the Cougars overcame an 8-2 start in the opening set to claw back and tie it up 15-15. Averett won 10 consecutive points as part of a 14-2 run to finish the frame. Averett took that momentum into the second set and opened with a 10-1 advantage to pull away from the start. The Cougars finished off Eastern Mennonite (9-8) by taking down the Royals in three to end the match in a little more than an hour.
Averett hit .417 as a team in the second set, and .265 overall for the match. Junior
Morgan Barnes led the way with 12 kills while hitting .625 herself. Senior
Sarah Shropshire added eight kills and seven digs, sophomore
Emma Nash had three blocks and sophomore
Erin Gray had a team-high 11 digs for Averett. Junior
Lauren Montren added nine digs, with sophomore
Makkenzie Compton totaling a team-high 19 assists.
Averett returns to action Thursday when the Cougars travel to conference foe Southern Virginia University for a 6 p.m. match.
