BREVARD, N.C. — Averett University football finished its season with a 40-3 conference road loss to Brevard College on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (5-5, 4-4 USA South) had trouble getting its offense going against Brevard (6-4, 6-2 USA South) for most of the game. Meanwhile the Cougars' defense held Brevard to a first quarter touchdown run and a second quarter touchdown to help keep Averett's deficit to 10-0 by halftime.
Brevard added to its lead with another touchdown and a field goal in the third quarter to go up 20-0. The Tornados added a pair of field goals, a touchdown pass and an interception return for touchdown to pull away in the fourth on its Senior Day.
Averett got on the board late with junior
Will Caviness' 34-yard field goal with 7:52 left in the fourth quarter after senior quarterback
Ryan Curle came in to lead the Cougars on a six-play, 35-yard drive into Tornado territory.
Senior linebacker
Conner Showalter finished his career with 12 total tackles, including eight solo. Junior cornerback
Jamal Ash added seven solo tackles for the Cougars.
The game was the last for Averett's football program as members of the USA South Conference, ending 22 years of competing in the league with one shared conference title (2006) and numerous individual accolades. The Cougars move to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference next fall.
