NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett University men's basketball lost a non-conference road game 76-54 at No. 17 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (1-5) was led by junior
Corey Baldwin's 16 points and junior Bryce McLaughlin's double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Baldwin, who scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, hit a jumper to give the Cougars an early 6-3 advantage. CNU (6-2), which knocked off then-No. 1 Randolph-Macon College in its last contest, inched ahead over the next few minutes. Averett, however, only trailed 16-15 with under seven minutes left in the first half. Yet, the Captains finished the period hot to take a 33-22 lead into the break.
CNU had three score in double figures to help the Captains maintain a double-digit lead in the second half.
In addition to Baldwin and McLaughlin, Averett also got seven rebounds and four blocks from sophomore
Jason Sellars II. The Cougars had 10 blocks as a team.
Averett returns to action on Dec. 8 when the Cougars play at Randolph College.
