BUENA VISTA, Va. — Averett University opened its 2020-21 season with a 2-0 road victory at Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (1-0) got on the scoreboard late in the first half when junior
Kellen Fees' long pass from the left side into the right side of the box was finished by junior
Johnny Kummander, who scored his first goal of the season in the 38th minute. Averett took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cougars finished off Southern Virginia (1-1) late when freshman Rion Klass passed to his left to junior
Ty Michelson for an easy goal in the 60th minute after the keeper came out to defend.
Averett outshot Southern Virginia 12-8, including 8-2 on goal. Senior
Colton Dutchess earned the win, making one save in more than 60 minutes in goal.
The Cougars play host to Ferrum College in a scrimmage on Tuesday before continuing the regular season slate on Saturday at home against conference foe Greensboro College at 3:30 p.m.
