DANVILLE, Va. — Junior
Johnny Kummander tallied the winning strike in Averett University men's soccer's 4-3 overtime thrilling victory over rival Greensboro College in its USA South Conference opener on Saturday.
Kummander struck the final blow just inside the first minute into the first overtime period corralling a ball in the corner that the junior played just inside the 18-yard box that chipped in over the goalies head for the game-winner.
Averett (2-0, 1-0 USA South) took a 1-0 lead just 13 seconds into Saturday conference opener when junior
Bradley Bizzell played a 50-yard plus pass ahead to junior
Lluc Pou Busquet that Busquet fired low into the back of the Greensboro net for his first goal of the year.
Greensboro (2-1, 0-1 USA South) tied the contest 1-1 following a penalty kick goal from Jordy Briceno, but junior
Erik Blick answered that score just under six minutes later when he blasted a free kick into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Cougars carried a 2-1 advantage midway into the second half, however, the Pride knotted things at 2-2 off a save deflection and took the lead 3-2 with Briceno's second score on the afternoon.
Averett didn't go down without a fight though as Busquet powered in his second score on the day off a free kick deflection to even the contest at 3-3 that came off the foot of junior
Ty Michelson.
The Cougars are off to one of their best starts in program history, including their first 2-0 start since the 1992 season and with the victory snapped a seven-game loosing skid against Greensboro.
Averett returns to the pitch on Friday when it travels to Fayetteville, North Carolina for a USA South meeting with Methodist University at 7 p.m.
