DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball celebrated Senior Day with a dominant 88-39 conference victory over William Peace University on Sunday at the Grant Center.
Averett was firing on all cylinders in first half while taking a commanding lead from the start. The Cougars opened the game on a 17-2 run, forcing William Peace to burn a timeout at the 15:33 mark. The Cougars stretched that eye-popping run to a 26-2 advantage, leading to another Pacers timeout with 12:16 to play in the first half. Averett led by as many as 38 points before William Peace scored right before the halftime to trim the Cougars' lead to 48-12 at the break.
The Cougars shot 62.5 percent in the first half and was 8-for-11 from beyond the arc. Until the William Peace layup in the final seconds of the period, Averett had twice as many 3-pointers as the Pacers had made field goals. William Peace shot just 17.9 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The story was much of the same in the second half as Averett continued to cruise to its second win over William Peace this weekend. The Cougars have won eight of their last nine meetings against the Pacers.
Averett's reserves played a bulk of the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 54 points with one minute to play. The 39 points allowed by Averett was just shy of the program record of 32 points allowed by the 1993 team against Warren Wilson College.
