DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team rolled off a 12-5 season-opening victory over Centenary College of Louisiana on Monday evening on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Â
Averett (1-0) got off to a hot start, creating an early 3-0 advantage to Centenary (0-2) in the first quarter. Freshman Liam Taylor made his collegiate debut, set the single-game goal record and point record with five goals and two assists. Taylor's impressive debut evened senior Nate Hann's three goals and four assists to give them a share of the single-game point record. Hann's four assists output set a new single-game program record in route to the Cougars putting up a school record 12 goals.
Â
Averett took a 3-1 advantage into the second quarter before extending its lead to 6-1 at the half. Taylor struck again to open the quarter off an assist from junior Marques Fleming. Junior Brenner Woodcock scored his first goal of the season to help extend the Cougar lead and added another goal late in the second half.
The duo of Hann and Taylor connected early in the second half to quickly create a 7-1 lead for Averett. Centenary followed that goal with a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 7-4. However, Hann ended that run in the third quarter off an assist from freshman Connor Taff, to give the Cougars an 8-4 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
The Cougars outscored the Gents 4-1 in the fourth period when junior Tyler Moodie capitalized on a man up opportunity for his first goal of the year.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host Ferrum College at 7 p.m.
