DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Elizabeth Peasley netted a USA South Conference single-game best 13 goals in women's lacrosse's 22-2 win over Sweet Briar College to open the season on Wednesday.
Averett (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 in the opening 27 seconds as Peasley netted the first of her 13 goals on the day off an assist from junior
Hannah Mae Ayers breaking her previous program record of 12 set against Salem College back in 2019.Â
The Cougars benefitted from a 7-0 scoring run to begin Wednesday's season opener as Peasley tallied the first two goals before junior
Courtney DeLone added her first score of the season off a Peasley assist.Â
Sweet Briar (0-2) broke its scoreless drought at the 14:19 mark of the first half to pull within 7-1, but Averett rattled off eight unanswered goals to control a 15-1, before the Vixens tallied their final goal of the evening.Â
The Cougars added seven goals in their final 30 minutes to come away with a 22-2 victory as Ayers finished the evening with seven assists and two goals, while DeLone added three goals and assist.

Kaylee Joblon split time in goal for the Cougars with Eby allowing just two scores on the evening and adding one save in 30 minutes of action.Â
Averett finished its season opener 3-4 on clear attempts and racked up an impressive 25 ground balls and 22 draw controls with Peasley and Perez tying with a game-high six draw controls apiece, while senior
Gabbie Porter scooped up a game-high four ground balls.Â
The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they take on Randolph College on the road beginning at 1 p.m.Â
