DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball had its three-game winning streak ended with a 52-48 conference loss to Greensboro College on Friday at the Grant Center.
Down late, Averett (3-4, 3-3 USA South) mounted a comeback to tie the game, 48-48, on redshirt junior
Isaiah Jones' 3-pointer with 1:04 to play. The Cougars' defense pressed full-court on Greensboro (6-11, 3-6 USA South) and nearly got a 10-second violation. The Pride managed to get the ball over a split second before and found a wide-open Keyshawn Dorsey for the go-ahead dunk.
After the Cougars missed a 3-pointer at the other end and Greensboro grabbed the rebound, Averett elected to try to get a defensive stop with about a five-second difference on the game clock compared to the shot clock. The Cougars got the stop they needed when Greensboro missed a shot, but the long rebound out to midcourt was collected by the Pride's Greyson Collins, who was fouled with 2.2 seconds to play. Collins hit both free throws to seal the win.
Averett, which had shot better than 47 percent from the floor over the past three games, couldn't find that same success against Greensboro. Playing their second game in three days, the Cougars shot a season-low 25.8 percent.
Jones finished with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds, while senior
Raymond Bullock III had nine points, six boards and four assists.
Greensboro, led by Collins' 23 points, held a 27-21 lead at halftime.
Averett travels to Greensboro for the second game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
