GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's basketball used a collective effort to fend off Greensboro College's second-half rally for a 75-67 conference road victory on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Averett (4-4, 4-3 USA South) clinched one of the four spots in the USA South Conference's East Division Tournament while eliminating Greensboro (6-12, 3-7 USA South) from postseason contention.
Six different Cougars scored between eight and 12 points as Averett shot 52.8 percent from the floor after coming off an off-night shooting two days earlier in a home loss to the Pride. Senior
Raymond Bullock III led Averett with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Averett controlled the game from the start and led by as many as 20 points with a 48-28 advantage with 16:09 left in the second half. Greensboro, however, didn't go away quietly as the Pride chipped away at Averett's lead down the stretch. Bradley Pierce's layup with 5:19 to play pulled Greensboro within 59-57 to give the Pride hope.
At the other end, freshman
Jordan Lewis drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to push Averett's lead back to five and the Cougars held Greensboro scoreless for the next two and a half minutes while extending their lead back to 10 points. Averett hit enough free throws and clamped down on defense to pull out the win to avenge Friday's 52-48 loss.
Freshman
Jason Sellars II added 11 points, junior
KeShawn Lewis netted a career-high 10 points and redshirt junior
Isaiah Jones had 10 points for Averett. Sophomore
Corey Baldwin scored nine points and tied Bullock for the team-lead in rebounds with eight. Senior
Montre' Cash also chipped in eight points.
Averett won the battle of the boards 35-26 and dominated in the paint, outscoring Greensboro 40-18.
Averett, which has won three of its last four, finishes the regular season slate with three games scheduled between Tuesday and Friday. Averett travels to Methodist University on Tuesday in a rescheduled game from Feb. 7.
