DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team defeated Oglethorpe University 7-6 on Saturday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Cougars fended off a late run from the Stormy Petrels to earn their second victory on the year.
Averett (2-1) began the first quarter relying heavily on their freshman, Connor Taff and Liam Taylor. Taylor struck first in the game followed by back to back goals from Taff to give the Cougars a 3-2 advantaged to end the first period. Taff's second goal was on a man-up opportunity for Averett and junior Parker Corbett was credited with the assist. Corbett also added two goals and five ground balls in the game.
Oglethorpe (0-2) was able to knot the score all up at three with 3:10 left before halftime. This tie did not last long as Corbett found the back of the net giving the Cougars a 4-3 lead before the teams headed into the locker room for halftime.
Averett wasted no time to begin the third quarter as Taff scored twice in the first two minutes of the quarter. Taff totaled four goals with one assist and four ground balls. The Stormy Petrels cracked into the Cougar lead a bit before headed into the final quarter of play off Addison Erwin's third goal on the year. Averett claimed a 6-4 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Another goal from Corbett gave the Cougars a 7-4 advantage with 11:44 remaining. Oglethorpe cut the lead to just one with three minutes to play but multiple saves from senior goal keeper
Jacob Shriver clinched the victory for the Cougars. Shriver had 11 saves and five ground balls.
Senior Will Merrit won 11 face offs and added three ground balls for the Cougars
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they host Randolph College at 5 p.m.
