DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team overwhelmed Randolph College 12-5 on Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium. The Cougars tallied nine first half goals to create an early advantage and never looked back.
Averett (3-1) saw freshman
Liam Taylor set the program record for points in a game scoring five goals and adding three assists all in the first half. After Taylor stuck in the first minute of the game, Randolph (0-2) tied things up with 12:44 left in the first quarter; this would be the only tie of the ball game.
The Cougars then rattled off six goals in a row creating a 7-1 advantage headed into the second period of play. Taylor scored four of his five goals in this stretch and assisted on the other three goals. Senior
Nate Hann found the back of the net for one of the Taylor assists as well as junior
Parker Corbett, who scored twice in the first. Corbett tallied four goals, two assists and 10 ground balls while Hann added the goal and one assist.
Averett wasted no time to begin the second quarter as Taylor extended the Cougar lead to 8-1. Corbett also found the net again off an assist from the junior
Brenner Woodcock. The Cougars headed into the locker room leading 9-2.
The second half showed much more defense as Averett only tacked on three more goals. Junior
Mason Foy scored his first goal of the season on a man-up opportunity. Senior
Rafael Walker also scored late for the Cougars securing the 12-5 victory.
Junior
Marques Fleming tallied nine ground balls to also help the Cougars.
The Cougars return to action on March 5th when they host Brevard College at 3 p.m.
