DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball program once again saw a late comeback fall short to Greensboro College 63-55 Sunday afternoon in Hanes Gym. Freshman
Lanie Bethel and
Demi Case both set career-highs for the Cougars with 11 points each.
Averett (4-8, 4-8 USA South) closed out the first period with a 7-0 run taking a 15-10 lead into the second quarter. Greensboro (3-7, 3-7 USA South) only let the Cougar led extend to six in the second quarter. Greensboro nailed a three-point basket with six seconds remaining before halftime to give Averett a one point lead 27-26.
The Cougars hit a season-high eight three pointers shooting 36.4 percent from long range. Greensboro created more second chance opportunities beating the Cougars on the offensive glass 18-8 and out rebounding Averett by 13.
Greensboro opened up the second half with a 10-0 run creating a 9-point lead. The Pride managed to extend it's lead to 12 heading into the final quarter of play leading 48-36. Back to back threes from Bethel and junior
Courtney Hunt cut the Greensboro advantage to just seven with 7:36 left to play. Hunt had nine points and five rebounds. With 3:12 remaining to play junior
Camryn Lunsford hit a three cutting the Pride lead to just one. Lunsford added 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Greensboro knocked down its free throws down the stretch to push them to the 63-55 victory. The Pride were led by Lauren Livingston, who had a game high 24 points.
Averett returns to action on Friday night when it hosts to Mary Baldwin University for a 7 p.m. matchup.
