DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped its home opener doubleheader against Brevard College on Saturday at Owen-Fulton Field by finals of 2-1 and 1-0 in non-conference action.
Game 1:
Averett (0-3) took a 1-0 advantage in Satuday's home opener after a scoreless opening three innings when sophomore
Kyle Wilson got the Cougars scoring going when he doubled off the left field fence and later came around to score on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
However, Brevard (2-2) rallied in the top of the fifth inning for two runs to take a 2-1 lead and held on as starter Matthew Scavotto held Averett in check over the final three innings to pick up the victory.
Freshman
Zelgin Jackson recorded two of the Cougars three hits in the opening game going 2-3 in his first collegiate start and registered an infield single in the second inning for his first collegiate hit.
Sophmore
Tyler Nuckols got the start for Averett, lasting 4.1 innings surrendering two runs on just two hits to go along with three strikeouts, while senior
Tanner Bradshaw pitched well in relief, throwing a scoreless 2.2 innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two.
Game 2:
A Cougars mishap would prove to be the difference in Saturday's second game as Brevard pushed across its lone run in the fourth inning off an Averett error and held on to pick up the 1-0 decision.
Freshman
Ryan Scheiderer got the start for Averett, making his collegiate debut pitching four innings, allowing five innings and one unearned run to go along with two strikeouts.
Junior
Avery Spicer dazzled in relief of Scheiderer pitching two scoreless innings, scattering two hits and striking out three batters, while senior
Cole Spain recorded the final three Cougars outs in one inning of work, not allowing a hit and striking out one.
Senior
Ryan Traylor finished 2-3 at the plate for the Cougars with back-to-back singles to left field in his first two plate appearances on the season.
Averett returns to the field on Sunday when it completes a three-game series with the Tornados with first pitch set for noon.
