The Cougars opened the season with a 77-73 loss to Covenant College on a neutral court at Brevard College on Jan. 16, but they have been idle since. Jordan Lewis was named the USA South Conference's Rookie of the Week on Jan. 18. A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Lewis scored 16 points in his collegiate debut against Covenant on Saturday. Lewis hit four 3-pointers while also grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists in 22 minutes off the bench for the Cougars. Averett garnered three first-place votes while being narrowly selected second in the 2021 USA South Conference East Division preseason coaches' poll, which was announced Wednesday. Methodist, which won last season's USA South Tournament title, were picked as the Eat favorite. The Monarchs also earned three first-place votes and edged Averett by one point in poll voting. N.C. Wesleyan was picked third, followed by Pfeiffer University, William Peace University and Greensboro College. Covenant , the defending West Division regular season champion, was again the favorite in the West while totaling four first-place votes. Maryville College was selected second with one first-place vote and Piedmont College was chosen third with two first-place votes. LaGrange College, Huntingdon College, Berea College and Brevard rounded out the West side of the poll.
