DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team came up short 2-1 against Meredith College Saturday afternoon on Meredith Athletic Field.

Averett (0-5, 0-5 USA South) inched out to a 1-0 lead after freshman Maiju Hyvarinen capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity in the 56th minute.

Meredith (2-1-1, 2-1-1 USA South) out shot Averett 8-6 but also earned eight more corner kicks then the Cougars. The Averett lead didn't last long as only four minutes passed by before the Avenging Angels knotted the score up at one in the 60th minute.

Meredith secured the 2-1 victory after scoring in the 72nd minute of play.

Averett is back in action when they host Mary Baldwin University Thursday for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
