LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University softball won Game 2 over Randolph College 7-2 to earn a non-conference doubleheader split with the WildCats on Sunday. Randolph won the opener 5-3.
Junior
Anna Coleman's three-run double in the top of the seventh all but sealed a win for Averett (3-7) in the second game as it extended the Cougars' lead to five runs over Randolph (4-6). Averett built a 1-0 lead in the first inning on junior
Hannah Thompson's RBI single and pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third on junior
Elena Lewis' RBI single to shortstop. Averett tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on a Thompson RBI sacrifice fly and an error to take a 4-0 advantage on Randolph.
The WildCats got two runs back in the sixth to get within two before Coleman came through with the clutch hit with the bases loaded in the final inning.
Junior
Erin Rankin went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and Lewis was 3-for-3 as Averett pounded out 13 hits in Game 2.
Senior
Kaitlyn Aherron (2-3) earned the win in the circle, striking out six while allowing two runs — both unearned — on five hits with no walks.
Randolph rallied to steal a win in Game 1 from the Cougars. Averett led 3-1 before the WildCats scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie it 3-3. Randolph went ahead with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.
Averett opened with a 2-0 advantage thanks to an RBI double from Thompson, who scored later in the first inning on a Randolph error. Rankin added an RBI double to extend the Cougars' advantage to 3-0 in the third.
Averett returns home to play Carolina University on Monday at 1 p.m. for its third doubleheader in as many days.
