LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University volleyball put away the University of Lynchburg 3-1 by taking the final three sets in non-conference road action Thursday evening.
After dropping the opening set 25-22 to Lynchburg (3-2), Averett (6-2) stormed back to win the second frame 25-17 to knot the match at 1-1. The Hornets were ahead 19-11 in Set 3 before a huge momentum shift powered the Cougars back. With sophomore
Lauren Montren at serve, Averett rattled off a 7-0 run that featured three kills from junior
Zamyiah Mangum to get Averett within 19-18. The Cougars won six of the next 10 points to pull out the 25-22 win to take a 2-1 advantage.
Averett closed out another tight battle in the fourth set to clinch the match. Tied 21-21, two Lynchburg attack errors coupled with kills from junior
Sarah Shropshire and freshman
Lanie Ouzts put away the Hornets 25-21 for a big non-conference road win for the Cougars.
Mangum had a team-high 14 kills, while Montren finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 21 digs. Shropshire also had a strong match with 10 kills and 11 digs, with Ouzts and sophomore
Morgan Barnes each finishing with nine kills. Senior
McKenzie Miller totaled 51 assists from the setter position with nine digs and senior
Myka Patterson added nine digs, for Averett, which was led defensively by freshman
Erin Gray's 24 digs.
Averett travels to Methodist University for a doubleheader on Saturday.
