DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball took down N.C. Wesleyan College 3-0 in a non-conference matchup of two conference foes Wednesday night in the Grant Center. The Cougars swept the Battling Bishops 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.
Averett (8-4) got strong performances from junior
Zamyiah Mangum and sophomore
Lauren Montren, who both had double-doubles. Mangum had team-highs of 13 kills and 18 digs, while Montren finished with 12 kills and 13 digs. Montren hit a team-best .375 on the night. The Cougars' attack also got strong efforts from sophomore
Morgan Barnes and freshman
Lanie Ouzts, who each got eight kills while hitting .353 and .357, respectively. Senior
McKenzie Miller totaled 36 assists with seven digs and two service aces and freshman
Erin Gray had 14 digs and three service aces.
The Cougars pulled away midway through the first set to go ahead. In the second set, Averett held an 18-17 edge late before winning the final seven points with senior
Myka Patterson at serve to go up 2-0. N.C. Wesleyan (2-8) stayed within 16-13 of Averett in Set 3 before the Cougars used a 9-1 run to clinch the victory.
The Cougars travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Friday for a conference matchup with the Bishops at 11 a.m. Friday and then face William Peace University in a non-conference mathchup at 1 p.m. in N.C. Wesleyan's gym as part of a tri-match.
