DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer dropped a double-overtime thriller 1-0 to William Peace University in USA South Conference action on Friday evening.
Averett (3-1, 2-1 USA South) put up a 14-6 shot advantage on the Pacers, but were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, as William Peace was able to keep the Cougars off the board in the opening 90 minutes of play.
The Cougars and Pacers played through a scoreless opening overtime period before a red card by Averett in the second overtime period gave William Peace a man-up advantage.
William Peace (2-1-1, 2-1-1 USA South) later benefitted by an Averett foul to earn a penalty-kick attempt that the Pacers netted for the game-winning score.
Averett finished Friday evening's conference clash with a 5-1 shot on goal advantage over the Pacers and both teams combined for 28 fouls and four cards.
The Cougars return back to the field on March 13 when they challenge N.C. Wesleyan College on the road at 4 p.m.
