LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett University softball lost tightly contested non-conference doubleheaders at the University of Lynchburg on Sunday. The Hornets came from behind in both games to win 3-2, including a walk-off win in Game 2.
In Game 1, Averett (0-4) trailed 1-0 after giving up a run in the first inning. However, the Cougars tied it on junior
Anna Coleman's solo homer to left field in the fourth and went in front 2-1 on freshman
Taylor Sullivan's first career homer in the fifth. Yet, Lynchburg (4-2) got two runs in the fifth on separate sacrifice flies to go back in front. The Hornets held off the Cougars the rest of the way to take the opener.
Junior
Kourtnie Blankenship accounted for two of Averett's five hits in the opener.
In the second game, Averett took the early lead when senor
Kaitlyn Aherron scored on an error in the first inning. Although Lynchburg tied it in the second on an RBI single, Coleman came through in the third inning with her second homer of the day, another solo shot to left field.
Down 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Lynchburg pushed across two runs on RBI singles to steal the win.
Coleman and freshman
Chloe Horton each had two hits for Averett in the nightcap.
The Cougars travel to No. 3 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday.
