WINCHESTER, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped non-conference doubleheader to No. 18 Shenandoah University on the road Saturday by finals of 12-3 and 18-3.
Shenandoah (16-4) benefitted from 12 runs on 16 hits in the opener, scoring five runs in the first inning before Averett (5-17) managed to pull within 5-3 with three runs in the second inning.
Senior
Ryan Traylor drove in the first run on an RBI fielder's choice and freshman
Brandt Brophy jogged off following a balk for the second score. Freshman
Zelgin Jackson connected on a RBI single that scored Traylor for the final run.
The Hornets, however, added five runs in the third to take a commanding 10-3 advantage before adding runs in the seventh and eighth innings to hang on for the 12-3 decision.
In game two Shenandoah led off with two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage before clubbing seven runs in the second and another four in the third to take a controlling 13-0 lead.
Junior
Avery Spicer put the Cougars on the board with a three RBI double in the third inning, but the Hornets added three more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 16-3 and another two runs in the eighth for the 18-3 win.
Averett returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Ferrum, Virginia for a 3 p.m. showdown with rival Ferrum College.
