VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Averett University men's tennis program earned a 7-2 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.
Averett (7-5) was able to complete a clean sweep in doubles play over the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan (7-6) earned their two points in No. 1 and No. 2 singles action.
In the doubles sweep, the Cougars picked up wins from sophomore
Jorge Figueroa and freshman
Rufus Nurminen in No. 1 doubles, 8-5. Senior
Stan Martherus and freshman
Lasse Bonn won No. 2 doubles, 8-3, while the duo of senior
Thomas Woodcock and freshman
Josh Bottrell closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win.
At No. 3 and No. 4 singles, Martherus and Bonn won in straight sets. Woodcock earned a hard fought victory winning 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 in the No. 5 singles slot. Sophomore
Evgeniy Bogdasaryan won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Cougars are back in action when they travel to William Peace University, Saturday, at 11 a.m.
