ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Senior
Elizabeth Peasley notched her 14th goal in the final seconds of Averett University women's lacrosse's 24-15 USA South Conference victory of N.C. Wesleyan College to break her own conference single-game goal record and snap the single-game point mark.
Averett (6-5, 4-2 USA South) needed just 18 seconds to get on the board in Saturday's USA South regular-season finale, taking a 1-0 lead when junior
Adriana Perez found fellow junior
Courtney DeLone for the opening goal.
N.C. Wesleyan (2-10, 0-6 USA South) tied the match 1-1 on an unassisted goal; however, Peasley scored on two of the next three Cougars goals and assisted on sophomore
Raven Felder's score for a 4-1 edge.
Peasley finished with six of her 14 goals in the first half, including assists on both of Felders goal as Averett controlled a 12-5 lead heading into the half.
The Battling Bishops opened the second half on a 2-0 run to pull within 12-7 of the Cougars, but Peasley, sophomore
Kelsey Steckroth and Perez combined for back-to-back-to-back goals to increase their lead to 15-7.
N.C. Wesleyan though went on a 7-3 scoring run to pull back within 18-14 of the Cougars with just over 12 minutes remaining.
That's when Peasley went off for the Cougars, scoring five goals over the final 11 minutes as part of a 6-1 scoring run, combining with a DeLone goal to preserve the 24-15 win.
Peasley finished the afternoon with 14 goals and two assists for a 16 point performance, breaking her previous goal record of 13 set earlier this season against Sweet Briar College and Randolph College, while also breaking the USA South point record set by Madison Ronelli and Cassie Walter of Methodist University.
Perez finished with a game-high 14 draw controls while freshman
Kaylee Joblon collected nine saves in net for the Cougars.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when they compete in the USA South East Division Semifinals with the opponent, time and location still to be determined.
