Three Cougars named to VaSID All-State Team in volleyball

DANVILLE, Va. — Three Averett University women's volleyball players earned a spot on the 2020-21 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Team, which was announced on Thursday. Senior McKenzie Miller headlined the selections as a VaSID All-State First Team selection.

In addition to Miller, sophomore Lauren Montren and freshman Erin Gray were voted to the VaSID All-State Second Team.

Miller, a setter from Danville, Virginia, was named to the USA South Conference East Division First Team while helping Averett win the 2020-21 USA South East Division Tournament championship this spring. She averaged 10.81 assists per set with a total of 735 assists, was second on the team with 20 service aces, totaled 171 digs for an average of 2.51 digs per set and finished with 14 total blocks and 41 kills. She also garnered the 2020-21 Barbara Kushubar Female Student-Athlete of the Year and received volleyball's service award at Averett's Night of Champions. She finished her playing career with 2,846 assists, 171 service aces and 914 digs.

Montren, an outside hitter from Creedmoor, North Carolina, also was named to the 2020-21 USA South All-Conference East Division First Team this season. She tallied a team-high 174 kills for an average of 3.05 kills per set with a hitting percentage of .221 and finished with 178 digs for an average of 3.12 digs per set. In addition, Montren had 11 blocks and 16 service aces. Gray, meanwhile, led team with 305 digs for an average of 4.36 digs per set as the team's starting libero. She also led the team with 29 service aces and was second on the team with 73 assists. Gray was named to the USA South Defensive Player of the Week once and was selected as Female Freshman Athlete of the Year at Averett's Night of Champions.

VaSID names 37 all-state teams in 22 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
