DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team lost a hard-fought 3-2 double-overtime thriller against Randolph College in its season opener on Wednesday evening.
Randolph (1-0) netted the deciding goal in the 117th minute of the second overtime period following a cross just outside the eight-yard box.
Averett (0-1) got down 1-0 following a wildcat goal in the first half, but senior
Erik Blick tied the match 1-1 with a penalty-kick strike following a Randolph foul inside the 18-yard box.
Senior Lluc Pou put the Cougars up 2-1 with an impressive long distance strike following a free ball in the 75th minute from roughly 35-yards away.
The wildcats evened the contest 2-2 just over four minutes later following a header off a corner kick.
Sophomore
Tyler Yates accounted for nine saves in net for the Cougars who faced 25 shots on the evening.
Averett returns to the pitch on Friday when it hosts Ferrum College at 4:30 p.m. on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
