Volleyball beats Piedmont, Maryville on first day of Stormy Petrel Classic

ATLANTA, Ga. — Averett University volleyball rolled to two more wins Friday, sweeping Piedmont University 3-0 before finishing the night with a 3-1 over Maryville College on the first day of the Stormy Petrel Classic hosted by Oglethorpe University.

Averett (7-0) dispatched conference foe Piedmont (0-6) by scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-18 in a non-conference matchup to open the day. Against the Lions, junior Jessica Beam had a team-high 11 kills for the Cougars, who had a .337 hitting percentage as a team. Senior Sarah Shropshire and sophomore Emma Nash each had nine kills, with juniors Lauren Montren and Morgan Barnes each adding seven kills. Sophomore Erin Gray led the team with 15 digs and Montren had 11 digs. Freshman Kinsley Stevens and sophomore Makkenzie Compton had 20 assists and 18 assists, respectively, while setting.

To finish the day, Averett battled another conference foe in a non-conference meeting. The Cougars took the first set 25-20 against Maryville (1-3) and held on for a 25-22 win in Set 2. The Cougars seemed poised to put the Scots away in three, but Maryville rallied in the third set to win 25-21. However, Averett sealed the win with a 25-23 victory in Set 4.
Shropshire starred in the nightcap, totaling 21 kills while swinging for a .341 average. Barnes and Beam each contributed nine kills, with Nash adding eight kills and four blocks. Gray had 30 digs to lead the team, followed by Montren's 21 digs. Stevens led the team with 27 assists and Compton had 16.

The Cougars finish play at the tournament on Saturday when they face LaGrange College at noon in another battle of USA South Conference teams in a non-conference setting.
