VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team lost a 3-1 decision to Virginia Wesleyan University on the road Saturday in non-conference action.
Virginia Wesleyan (3-0) capitalized on two first half goals to control a 2-0 advantage heading into the half time break.
The Marlins added their third goal just under 20 minutes into the second half to take a commanding 3-0 edge.
Averett (2-3) got on the board in the 74th minute when sophomore
Rion Klaas scored on a penalty kick to pull the Cougars within 3-1.
The Cougars managed to put up a 14-13 shot advantage over Virginia Wesleyan, equaling the Marlins with eight shot apiece on frame.

Tyler Yates recorded five saves in net while Klaas paced the team with four shots.
Averett returns to action on Sunday when it faces Eastern Mennonite University at 2 p.m. on the road.
