LAGRANGE, Ga. — Senior
Johnny Kummander's late second half game-winner pushed Averett University men's soccer past LaGrange College 6-5 on Saturday evening in a high-scoring showdown.
LaGrange (3-1) wasted no time in Saturday's non-conference clash taking a 2-0 lead early in the opening minutes before sophomore
Agustin Jaraba tallied his third goal of the season to pull within 2-1.
The Panthers, however answered Jaraba's goal with one of their own with :02 seconds remaining on the clock in the first half to take a 3-1 edge into the break.
LaGrange increased its advantage to 5-1 with early back-to-back goals in the opening minutes of the second half as it looked like it was on its way to an easy victory, but Averett (4-4) wouldn't go down without a fight.
Senior Lluc Pou netted his third goal on the year with 24 minutes remaining to pull Averett within 5-2. While senior
Leevi Partanen added his second goal of the second to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Just under two minutes later, Averett scored yet again to pull within one goal of LaGrange at 5-4 as Kummander scored the first of two goals on the evening.
Sophomore
Sebastian Weijdegaard tallied the equalized to deadlock the match at 5-5 with under 12 minutes remaining scoring off an assist by Partanen as the Cougars overcame a four goal deficit.
Kummander would find the back of the net with nine minutes remaining for his second goal on the evening this one coming off an assist by senior
Ty Michelsen as Averett trailed 5-1 with 24 minutes remaining. Pulling off an improvable comeback that saw the Cougars score an astonishing five goals, four with under 20 minutes remaining to earn the win.
Kummander, Pou and Jaraba now each share the team lead with three goals apiece as the Cougars will look to carry momentum into tomorrow's 2 p.m. ET battle with Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama.
