DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team dropped its conference opener against Meredith College 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (2-3-1, 0-1 USA South) carried some momentum early as senior goal keeper
Morgann Dills made a save on a penelty kick in the 6th minute of the first half.
The Cougars saw its only goal come from freshman
Celia de Diego in the 47th minute, giving her eight goals on the year. Sophomore
Jenna Franklin was credited with the assist giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
Meredith (3-2-0) was actually out shot by the Cougars 18-13 for the game but put one more shot on goal then Averett. The Avenging Angels tied the game up in the 84th minute of play sending the game into overtime.
In golden goal overtime Meredith walked it off in the second period off a header in the 108th minute.
Averett is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. when it hosts to William Peace University.
