DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball improved to 5-0 with a pair of non-conference wins to finish of its Cougar Classic on Saturday at the Grant Center. The Cougars rallied from behind to top Oglethorpe University in five sets, then swept Guilford College to finish the evening.
In the opening match of the day for Averett, the Cougars were tied 16-16 with Oglethorpe (2-2) in the opening frame before the Petrels scored nine of the final 10 points to take the first set 25-17. Oglethorpe also looked poised to win Set 2, going up 14-6 before Averett made a run to take a 17-16 advantage. The game went to extra points, with Averett escaping with a 28-26 win to tie the match.
Much like Set 1, Oglethorpe surged ahead late to pull away 25-19 to go ahead 2-1. However, Averett rebounded with a 25-20 win in Set 4 to force a deciding fifth set. In the final frame, which was tied 6-6, Averett dominated late by scoring nine of the final 10 points to seal the win, 15-7.
Senior
Sarah Shropshire, who was named Cougar Classic MVP, totaled a career-high 24 kills in the five-set win over Oglethorpe. Sophomore
Erin Gray, who also made the all-tournament team, led Averett with a career-high 31 digs, while junior
Lauren Montren finished with a career-best 27 digs to go with eight kills. Sophomore
Emma Nash also had double-digit kills with 10 while adding five total blocks. Senior
Zamyiah Mangum chipped in 17 digs and freshman
Kinsley Stevens had a team-best 40 assists.
Averett had an easier time taking down Guilford (2-2) in three sets, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18. Shropshire again led the team with eight kills, with Montren, Nash and junior
Jessica Beam each adding seven kills. Gray and freshman
Carlie Deason led the team with eight digs apiece. Stevens had 19 assists and sophomore
Makkenzie Compton had 16 assists.
Averett is scheduled to head to Atlanta to play three matches in Oglethorpe's tournament Sept. 10-11.
