HAMPTON, Va. — The nationally ranked Averett University wrestling team fell 24-12 to nationally ranked Division II Kutztown University in the championship match of the Virginia Duals in the American College Division on Saturday night at the Hampton Coliseum.
The Cougars took down the No. 3 seed Liberty University 19-14 to begin Day 2 of the Virginia Duals to advance to the finals for the first time in program history. Averett led early on against Kutztown as senior
Sam Braswell and freshman
Jesse Alvarado won by decision at 125 and 157, respectively, and senior
Brandon Woody won by tech fall. Division II Kutztown, however, came back to win 24-12.
Braswell earned Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament for the second time this year, helping the Cougars place the highest they have ever finished in the Virginia Duals. It's the third time Averett has produced the Virginia Duals' Most Outstanding Wrestler and the second time Braswell has earned that distinction.
