SUFFOLK, Va. — The Averett University men's golf B Team opened play at the 73rd Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate Championship on Monday at Sleep Hole Golf Course. The Cougars shot a collective 36-over-par on the par-72, 6,499-yard course.

Averett's B Team sits in a tie for seventh, 17 shots off the lead held by Roanoke College. The Maroons are atop the leaderboard at 19-over through 18 holes.

Averett was led in the opening round by freshman Miguel Rodriguez Lamana, who shot 8-over to put him in a tie for 23rd. Freshman Lennon Nicholls and sophomore Hunter Crute were both one shot back at 9-over, while sophomore Fred Koskinen shot 10-over and junior Garrett Mason finished the round at 13-over. Playing as an individual, Averett sophomore Alejandro Lucas Nielfa finished at 23-over.

Christopher Newport University's Michael Thomas, playing as an individual, leads the tournament by one stroke after carding a 1-under 71 on the opening day.

The final round begins on Tuesday morning.
