GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's golf is tied for third following Monday's opening round at Guilford College's O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted at The Cardinal by Pete Dye. The Cougars shot a collective 9-over-par over the opening 18 holes.
Averett, which held the overall lead for a bulk of the day, had three golfers finish the first round in the top 16 of the field of 102 individuals. Freshman
Max Pettersson carded a 1-under 70 on the par-71, 6,755-yard course to put him in fifth place entering Tuesday's final round. Meanwhile, junior
Casper Mellby shot 1-over to put him in a tie for 10th and junior
Antti Vahvaselka is tied for 16th at 2-over. There is a four-way tie for first place at 3-under.
The Cougars as a team are tied with No. 2 Methodist University at 9-over after carding a 293. No. 7 Christopher Newport University leads the field of 18 teams at 1-over, followed by No. 1 Emory University at 8-over.
Averett also got a 7-over 78 from senior
Caleb Kimbrough to round out its four-person score. Sophomore
Killian O'Reilly also competed for the Cougars.
