Men's golf finishes sixth, three Cougars finish in top 20 at O'Briant-Jensen

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's golf finished sixth Tuesday at Guilford College's O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted at The Cardinal by Pete Dye. The Cougars shot a collective 22-over-par at the 36-hole, two-day event and also had three golfers finish in the top 20 individually.

Averett, which hovered in the top three for most of the second round, shot 13-over as a group over the final 18 holes Tuesday. No. 7 Christopher Newport University held on to its opening day lead to finish the tournament at even-par for the win, which was eight strokes better than No. 2 Methodist University. Host Guilford made a big push on the final day to move up seven spots to third. No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University was fourth and No. 1 Emory University was fifth, just one stroke ahead of Averett.

Freshman Max Pettersson shot 4-over during the final round to finish at 3-over for the tournament, garnering him 11th place. Junior Antti Vahvaselka was one stroke back at 4-over for the tournament to put him in a tie for 12th and junior Casper Mellby finished at 6-over to help him finish in a tie for 20th in the field of 102 individuals.

Hampden-Sydney College's Alex Rubino won the tournament by three strokes with a 9-under 133 on the par-71, 6,755-yard course.

Averett also got a 10-over 152 from senior Caleb Kimbrough to round out its four-person score while sophomore Killian O'Reilly also competed for the Cougars and improved his opening round score by 18 shots with a 4-over 74 on Tuesday.

The O'Briant-Jensen is Averett's final tournament for the fall season.
