Averett vs. Christopher Newport
The Series: Averett is 17-71 all-time against Christopher Newport dating back to the 1976-77 season. The Captains have won the last eight matchups, including last year's 76-54 win over the Cougars in Newport News. Prior to that, the two schools hadn't faced each other since both were members of the USA South Athletic Conference last during the 2012-13 season. Before CNU's current eight-game win streak over the Cougars, Averett had won four in a row, including the 2009 USA South Conference championship game on the Captains' home court.
Averett at a Glance:  Averett University men's basketball returns home for a non-conference matchup with Christopher Newport University, the new No. 1 ranked team in the nation by d3hoops.com this week. Averett had its five-game win streak snapped with a 71-67 road loss at Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday. ... Averett's last win against a No. 1 ranked team in the national poll came on Nov. 27, 2006. The Cougars upended the then-reigning national champion Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins 81-73 in Danville. Virginia Wesleyan went on to finish as the 2006-07 national runner-up that season. Coincidentally, current Averett head coach 
David Doino was an assistant coach with the Marlins during that time.
Christopher Newport at a Glance: CNU, meanwhile, defeated N.C. Wesleyan University 79-71 in the championship game of the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational on Nov. 27 to remain perfect this season. ... Averett and CNU have one common opponent so far this season. Averett beat Methodist University 77-53 on the road on Nov. 13, and CNU topped the Monarchs 82-59 in Newport News on Nov. 22.
