Men's basketball rolls past Greensboro in conference action

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball picked up its 10th win in 11 games after taking down Greensboro College 64-50 in USA South Conference action at the Grant Center on Tuesday night.

Averett (12-9, 9-1 USA South) got 15 points apiece from juniors Corey Baldwin and Jalen Rowell as the Cougars notched their ninth consecutive conference win. Up by 16 at halftime, Averett withstood a surge by Greensboro (9-13, 4-7 USA South) at the start of the second period. The Pride trimmed their deficit in half, getting within 35-27 within the first two minutes of the half.

Averett weathered the storm, however. After Greensboro pulled within seven points with 14:39 to play, the Cougars went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead back to double digits and held on the rest of the way to complete the series sweep of the Pride.

Averett also won 70-59 in Greensboro on Jan. 19. The Cougars have won three in a row against the Pride, including nine of the last 11 meetings.

The Cougars never trailed at any point, thanks to a strong start by Baldwin. He scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer just before halftime to give Averett a 35-19 advantage at the break.

Averett also got nine points and six rebounds from junior Miles Pauldin and eight points from junior Raja Milton. Baldwin, Pauldin and senior KeShawn Lewis all tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Averett shot 45.5 percent from the floor and beat Greensboro 45-38 on the glass to snap the Pride's three-game win streak.

Averett returns to the court on Saturday when the Cougars travel to William Peace University for a 4 p.m. game.
