DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball pounded out 11 hits, but the Cougars couldn't get a timely base hit as Tufts University picked up an 8-0 non-conference win Tuesday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Tufts (7-0), which is receiving votes in the d3baseball.com national poll, scored three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the first to go in front 3-0. Averett (7-13) looked to answer in the first, second and third innings as the Cougars put runners in scoring position. However, the Jumbos worked out of each jam, including a bases-loaded situation in the third.
Tufts added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 5-0, but Averett still remained in striking distance. Averett loaded the bases in the fifth and had two on in the sixth but couldn't crack the scoreboard. The Cougars continued to have opportunities, loading the bases in the eighth and putting two on in the ninth. None yielded a run as Tufts got a timely out each time.
The Jumbos, who had 13 hits, tacked on three runs in the ninth to pull away and remain undefeated.
Freshman
Caden Grider led Averett offensively with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two doubles. Junior
Nolan Maccabe and senior
Avery Spicer each had two hits as well for Averett.
Averett begins a three-game series with Southern Virginia University on Thursday at home.
