DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped its home finale 11-5 to William Peace University on Sunday to complete a three-game series against the Pacers at Owen-Fulton Field.
William Peace took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly before Averett tied it in the bottom of the inning when junior
Nolan Maccabe scored on a double play. The Pacers then broke it open with a grand slam to left-center in top of the second inning to give William Peace a 5-1 edge. Although Averett got one run back in the bottom of the second on senior
Nate Tuck's RBI double, the Pacers tacked on three more runs in the third to make it 8-2.
Maccabe led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to left field, and sophomore
Brandt Brophy added an RBI single later in the inning to help Averett get back within 8-4.
William Peace answered right back in the top of the sixth with a three-run rally with two outs to extend its lead back to 11-4. Averett cut its deficit to 11-5 in the bottom of the sixth on senior
Brandon Hatcher's RBI single to left center. However, the Cougars couldn't get any closer.
Averett finishes the regular season on the road with a three-game series at Greensboro College beginning on April 29.
