GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball took Game 1 of the series with a 5-2 road victory over conference foe Greensboro College on Friday.
After Greensboro (14-20, 9-10 USA South) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Averett (13-25, 6-13 USA South) answered in the third inning to go in front. Senior
Brandon Hatcher's RBI sacrifice fly tied it, and sophomore
Drew Rabon singled home sophomore
Brandt Brophy to put Averett ahead 2-1. Brophy and freshman
Preston Robbins each added RBI singles in the fourth to extend the Averett lead to 4-1.
Greensboro got a solo homer in the fifth, but Averett got that run back in the sixth when freshman
Mason Williams doubled, and then scored on a wild pitch from second base after no one covered home.
Freshman
Caden Grider went 3-for-4 for Averett, which also got two hits from junior
Nolan Maccabe, Hatcher and freshman
Zach Smith.
Senior right-hander
Avery Spicer earned the win on the mound with a complete game effort.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Saturday.
