ROME, Ga. — East Division No. 2 seed Averett University men's tennis rolled past West Division No. 3 seed LaGrange College 9-0 Thursday afternoon in the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Averett (14-4) built a 3-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles win came from sophomore
Rufus Nurminen and freshman
Martinho Goncalves 8-3 while senior
Stan Martherus and freshman
Jay Trip won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Junior
Jorge Figueroa and freshman
Shori Nishizoe was the first doubles match to finish and wrapped up things for the Cougars winning 8-3 as well.
Nurminen, Gonvalves, Trip, Martherus and Figueroa also all picked up wins in singles in straight sets. Sophomore
Philipp Bohnenkamp picked up the sixth win in the No. 6 singles slot winning 6-1, 6-1.
The Cougars are back in action Friday at 2 p.m. when they battle the East Division No. 4 seed Methodist University.
