FOREST, Va. — Averett University's men's soccer team was voted eighth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's preseason poll, which was unveiled Friday. The Cougars begin their inaugural season in the ODAC this fall.
Averett went 9-7-2 (4-1-2) in its final season as members of the USA South Athletic Conference in 2021, but the Cougars now make the jump to the ODAC. Washington and Lee University was picked as the favorite with 11 first-place votes, while the University of Lynchburg was chosen second with two first-place votes. Washington and Lee earned the ODAC regular season title with an 8-0-1 record and made it to the final four in the NCAA Tournament. Roanoke College, Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Wesleyan University rounded out the top five in this year's preseason poll, followed by Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph College and Averett.
Averett opens its season — its ninth under head coach Phillip Wilson — on Sept. 1 at Southern Virginia University in a non-conference matchup. ODAC play begins on Sept. 21 at home against Virginia Wesleyan.
