Two Cougars in top seven after two rounds as men's golf opens up at Gate City Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's golf has two players in the top seven after 36 holes of play at Greensboro College's Gate City Invitational hosted at Starmount Forest Country Club on Monday. Freshman Max Pettersson is tied for fourth at 2-under-par, while junior Antti Vahvaselka is tied for seventh at 1-under following Monday's opening day of play.

In its first action of the fall, Averett shot a collective 24-over through the first two rounds Monday to put the Cougars in 13th place in a tightly contested field. Methodist University leads the tournament by three shots at 1-under, putting the top 13 teams within a 25-stroke margin on the par-71, 6,682-yard course.

Junior Casper Mellby shot 10-over, senior Caleb Kimbrough overcame a tough first round to shoot 4-over in the second round to put him at 20-over. Freshman Lennon Nicholls also competed for the Cougars, finishing at 30-over entering Tuesday's final round.

Guilford College's Michael Vick leads the tournament by three strokes at 9-under.
