BUENA VISTA, Va.— Averett University wrestling made a statement in its first dual competition of the season, defeating Southern Virginia University 47-3.

The Cougars dominated, recording five falls, two technical falls, a major decision and a decision. Averett (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) managed to win all but one weight class in its dual against Southern Virginia (0-1, 0-1 ODAC).

At 125 pounds, senior Alex Logsdon had control over the match the entire time, defeating Quinn Richards by technical fall 21-6.

Senior Daniel Porter made quick work of his opponent pinning Francisco Ramirez at the 2:03 mark in the 133-pound weight class.

At 141 pounds, senior Mauricio Reyes scored another six points for the Cougars, pinning Porter Kinne around the two-minute mark.

Freshman Carter Shupert kept the onslaught going with yet another pin coming around two minutes against Jacob Smith at 149 pounds.

In the 157-pound weight class, sophomore Xavier Swanson rag dolled Weston Hirschi, defeating him by technical fall 17-2.

Junior Anthony Taylor pinned Ricardo Diego in the shortest amount of time of any other wrestler in the dual, pinning him in a minute.

At 174 pounds, junior Khalil Mitchell lost to Tyson Hoopes by decision.

Senior George Moseley made his first appearance since the Cougars' 2021-22 season. He did not disappoint, he pinned Carson Hyde at the 1:32 mark in the 184-pound weight class.

At 197 pounds, Jamar Christian defeated Loyal Holm by fall at 3:27.

Heavyweight Sheldon Davis bested Weston Memmott by a 6-3 decision.

The Cougars are back in action on Sunday when they compete in the Lycoming College Invitational and the James Madison University Invitational.
