Averett University wrestling defeated Division I Queens University of Charlotte 36-16 and Marymount University 45-3 on Saturday night in the Grant Center.
The Cougars (2-0, 1-0 ODAC) dominated both of their opponents, earning a combined six falls, five technical falls, two major decisions and one decision.
At 125 pounds, junior
Mason Barrett had complete control of the match from the start, leading 11-0 entering the second period. It did not take him much time at all to defeat Brendan Martin by a 15-0 technical fall to lead Queens (N.C.) (1-3, 0-0 ASUN) 5-0. Against Marymount (0-1, 0-0 AEC), Barrett earned another technical fall against Dylan Cowerd.
Freshman
A.J. Orlando III pinned Griffen Gonzales in a blink of an eye, getting the count in 1:10 of the match starting at 133 pounds. Orlando earned his second fall of the night against Marymount's Joseph Custodio.
At 141 pounds, senior
Mauricio Reyes came back strong after losing his first match against Queens (N.C.), he defeated Kadin Smith by a 23-8 technical fall against Marymount.
Freshman
Carter Shupert had his first match of the night was against Marymount's Brooks Coleman. Shupert earned his third pin of the season under two minutes into the match at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, sophomore
Xavier Swanson started wearing down on his opponent and was able to score a couple of takedowns on Suhaib Hatamleh. Swanson had a swift reversal to pin Hatamleh at 5:47. Swanson kept the momentum going against the Saints, scoring a 11-3 major decision against Pahris Petalas
Junior
Anthony Taylor Ragdolled his opponent, scoring takedown after takedown to finally pin Vladimir Sukhikh just under three minutes at 165 pounds. Against Marymount, Taylor had another commanding win with an 18-2 technical fall.
At 174 pounds, junior
Khalil Mitchell entered the second period with a 6-1 lead against Greg Merriman. Ultimately, Mitchell defeated his opponent by a 13-4 major decision. Mitchell got a 15-0 technical fall against Mohamed Fofana in just under two minutes.
184-pound senior
George Moseley made quick work of D'Andree Hunt, allowing him just one point in a 16-1 technical fall.
In the 197-pound weight class, senior
Jamar Christian was putting on a clinic, defeating Riley Kuhn by a commanding 15-3 major decision win. Against Markelyn Fenner, Christian had two takedowns in-a-row, pinning his opponent on the second attempt.
Heavyweight
Sheldon Davis defeated Marymount's Brey Loving in a 6-3 decision.
