HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Averett University men's basketball fell to No. 2 Hampden-Sydney College 88-60 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.

Averett (1-6, 0-2 ODAC) took a brief 3-2 lead in the opening minutes on a highly contested made 3-pointer from senior
Jordan Lewis. Hampden-Sydney (5-0, 1-0 ODAC) then slowly built a 17-8 advantage eight minutes into the game. The Tigers extended their lead to as many as 18 points in the opening half, going up 37-19 before Averett narrowed the gap to 39-26 by halftime.
The Cougars opened the second half strong, making their first four field goals to stay within striking distance. The nationally ranked Tigers, picked to win the ODAC, eventually pulled away down the stretch to remain undefeated early in the season.
Lewis finished with a team-high 20 points for his second 20-point game this season. He also grabbed  a team-best rebounds, while redshirt junior
Zach Shumate added nine points and six rebounds. The Cougars also got nine points from freshman
Nick Andrews and eight points from freshman
Colton Price.
Averett shot 47.7 percent from the floor, but Hampden-Sydney outscored the Cougars 19-3 on points off turnovers. The Tigers shot 53 percent for the game and hit eight 3-pointers.
Averett returns home to host Bridgewater College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
