Second half comeback attempt comes up short in men's basketball loss to Bridgewater

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's basketball cut a double-digit deficit down to five midway though the second half, but Bridgewater College held on for a 69-52 conference victory Saturday afternoon in the Grant Center.

Down by 15 at halftime, Averett (1-7, 0-3 ODAC) cut deficit to 38-28 in the opening minutes of the second half. Bridgewater (7-2, 3-1 ODAC) weathered that storm momentarily before the Cougars continued their comeback attempt. A 3-pointer by senior Jordan Lewis, a pair of made free throws by freshman Nick Andrew and a layup by Jason Sellars II trimmed a 12-point Bridgewater lead down to 44-39 with 12:55 to play. The Eagles, however, countered with a 9-0 run to add cushion back to their lead on their way to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference road victory over the Cougars.

Bridgewater opened the game on a 17-2 run to take control early. Averett got as close as 13 points in the first period before the Eagles extended its lead to 38-23 at halftime.

Lewis led Averett with 15 points and five assists, while Sellars had 10 points. Junior Bryce Shaw chipped in nine points with Andrews scoring eight points for the Cougars.

Jordan Cooper and Alec Topper led Bridgewater with 20 points and 19 points, respectively, as the Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor.

Averett hosts No. 21 Virginia Wesleyan University in its final home game of the 2023 calendar year on Wednesday.
