DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball lost 3-2 to Greensboro College in extra innings on Tuesday afternoon on Owen-Fulton Field in non-conference play.
Senior pitcher
David Asbill had a masterful outing while not factoring in the decision. He started off hot in the first inning, striking out the side. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and finished with 10 strikeouts.
Averett's offense give Asbill run support early. Sophomore
Kevin Zischke put himself in scoring position after doubling to left field in the bottom of the first inning, Freshman
Chris Byrd singled to the right side to send Zischke home to put Averett (2-2-1) up 1-0. In the third inning, sophomore
Cole McLain stole second base, putting him in scoring position for junior
Brandt Brophy, who singled him home to extend the Cougars' lead to 2-0.
Starting in the eighth inning, Greensboro (3-1) started chipping away at Averett's lead. In the ninth inning, the tying run was scored by Greensboro thanks to a bases-loaded walk that knotted the game 2-2.
The Pride scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, allowing the runner from third to score on the play. Averett got a runner to third in the bottom of the 10th but couldn't get the tying run in.
Averett is scheduled to play next at Marymount University in a noon doubleheader on Saturday, weather permitting.
