HIGH POINT, N.C. — Averett University baseball clutched Game 1 against Greensboro College, winning 6-3 in extra innings. In Game 2, the Cougars fell to Greensboro 10-3 on Sunday night.
In the top of the tenth inning of Game 1, the Cougars had sophomore
Kevin Zischke and junior
Brandt Brophy on second and third with no outs. Freshman Chris Bryd came up big with a two RBI single to put Averet (3-3-1) up 5-3. Sophomore
Preston Robbins swatted a single to advance Byrd to second, putting him in scoring position. Junior
Chase Davis kept the rally going with a single to load the bases. To add insult to injury, sophomore
Cole McLain was hit by pitch to send home Byrd. Byrd had a stellar performance, batting .500 on top of two RBIs.Â
In Game 1, Greensboro (4-3) was up early after a single sent home the runner from second to make the score 1-0. In the second inning, the Cougars tied the game up 1-1. Byrd reached first base on an error by the shortstop and later scored. Â Averett had the upper hand going into the bottom of the ninth inning with a score of 3-1. Greensboro had a runner get on base after an error at shortstop and later scored two runs to tie the game 3-3.
In Game 2, Greensboro was up 4-0 going into the fourth inning.
Gavin Colwell hit his second home run of the season to give Averett its first run of the game. As Greensboro steadily increased its lead all game, the Cougars added two more runs to the board in the eighth inning. Senior
Nolan Maccabe reached first after an error at shortstop and later stole second. Brophy singled to center and scored Maccabe from second. Brophy stole his way to third base and scored on a sac fly by sophomore
Tyler Wilson to right field. Unfortunately, the Cougars' late effort was not enough to best the Pride.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday against N.C. Wesleyan University at 2:30 p.m.
